LSU QB Burrow named AP player of year

What figures to be an award-winning week for LSU quarterback Joe Burrow is underway.

Burrow was named The Associated Press college football player of the year presented by Regions Bank on Thursday in a landslide vote, making him the first LSU player to win the the 21-year-old award.

Burrow, who has led the top-ranked Tigers to an unbeaten season and their first College Football Playoff appearance, received 51 of 54 first-place votes from AP Top 25 poll voters and a total of 159 points.


Ed McCaffrey to coach Northern Colorado

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) Three-time Super Bowl champion Ed McCaffrey is the new head football coach at Northern Colorado.

"I am excited to be joining the University of Northern Colorado as their Head Football Coach!" McCaffrey announced on Instagram, and the school confirmed his hiring minutes later via a news release.


Pac-12 Commissioner: Missing CFP harmful

NEW YORK (AP) A Pac-12 team has made the College Football Playoff just twice in six seasons and none of the last three.

If anyone should be leading the charge toward expanding the current four-team model, you would think it would be Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott.

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) Army quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr. is a bundle of nerves. The thought of playing one's final college game can have that effect, and it's magnified when the opponent is a fierce rival.

"One last time. I want to make it perfect," Hopkins said as he prepared to face Navy on Saturday. "I'm super excited but definitely nervous."

The Colorado State football coach wandered from room to room, before taking a moment to gaze out a window at the mountains in the distance.


UNLV hires Oregon OC Arroyo as coach

LAS VEGAS (AP) UNLV has hired Oregon offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo as its next head football coach.

Athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois announced Wednesday that Arroyo will succeed Tony Sanchez, who was fired Nov. 25 after going 19-40 in five seasons.


ASU RB Benjamin declares for draft

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Arizona State junior running back Eno Benjamin declared Wednesday for the 2020 NFL draft.

Benjamin announced his decision on Instagram.


Kentucky's Bowden wins Hornung Award

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Kentucky junior Lynn Bowden has won the Paul Hornung Award as college football’s most versatile player. He is the first Wildcat player to be honored by the Louisville Sports Commission.

Bowden moved to quarterback at midseason after starting as a receiver and return specialist. He broke school records for career (1,297) and single-season (1,136) rushing yards by a QB. An Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference first team selection at the all-purpose position, Bowden also broke the SEC single-game rushing mark for a quarterback (284 yards) and ranks eighth nationally in all-purpose yardage.


Northwestern hires BC's Bajakian as OC

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) Northwestern hired Boston College's Mike Bajakian as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on Wednesday.

Bajakian, who spent four seasons at quarterbacks coach for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, spent last year as OC and QBs coach for Boston College, which boasted the top rushing attack in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
